The Chaddesden Historical Group Website
Welcome to the website of the Chaddesden Historical Group. This site is part of a 3 year project, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, to build a comprehensive archive dedicated to the history of Chaddesden, its immediate surrounding area and the people who lived here.
The borders of Chaddesden can, and do, cause disagreements especially with regard to Chaddesden Hill and where Derby stops and Chaddesden starts. It all depends on which map you use and how far back in time you go.
There were two separate boundaries indicated and they were, the Parliamentary Boundary which came up from the old canal, round the edge of the cemetery on the City side, across the Nottingham Road and along Cornwall Road up towards where Roe Farm is now. Then we have the County Borough and Union Boundary which also came out of the canal but ran along the Chaddesden side of the cemetery resulting in a mile post by the Fire Station. Both of these boundaries can be seen on item 4 in the maps section. The reason I mention this boundary issue is that it is a classic example of why we won’t be able to get it right all the time, there are grey areas. We have therefore included a comments block after most articles and look forward to hearing from you with any further information you may have.
We had to select a logo for the group so the wartime cartoon figure of Chad seemed to fit the bill quite nicely. Wartime social comments were not the only time the name Chad appears in English history however, Saint Chad was a prominent Anglo Saxon churchman and first bishop of Lichfield. He died in March of 672 and had at least 33 churches and wells named after him, mostly in the Midlands. We are more in line with the 20th century Chad and this reminds us not to take ourselves too seriously. We enjoy researching the history of Chaddesden and we have discovered a vast amount of information hidden in the memory banks and attics of some of our more senior members. We intend to record this information and then make available for the wider audience to enjoy. If you are interested in the history of Chaddesden why not come and join us. Should you wish to join the group we have an annual membership fee of £7 with £2 payable on the door at each meeting. This helps to cover the room rental and speakers fees. Should you be unable to attend our meetings you can keep in touch with us by email now on info@chaddesdenhistoricalgroup.co.uk
To thank everyone who has helped get this site on air would take a considerable time but several people deserve a mention and they include, the chairman and other committee members of the Chaddesden Historical Group as well as Paul Godney and his team at Vault Studios who are at http://www.vaultstudios.co.uk. I must not forget Rita Johnson, Janet Ireland and Margaret Poyser who have helped me with support, research and the general hassle of getting the project on air. I hope you find something of interest here and we will be continuing to add more items on a regular basis.
Andrew J Bailey, Group Archivist and Project Leader.
